In the English language there are many words we commonly use without giving much thought to their origins. For instance, the word, “plumber.” Seems common enough, but have you ever wondered why this is the name we have given to those who work on the pipes in our homes? The word plumber actually dates back to the Roman Empire. The origin of the word comes from the Latin word for “lead,” which is “plumbum.”
In the Roman era, the men who worked on drain pipes and bathhouses used lead, or “plumbum” to complete these projects. Since this was their occupation, they were known as experts of plumbum, leading them to be called, “Plumbumarius.” Eventually, as many Latin words do- these terms were translated and evolved into completely different words, making “plumbers” and “plumbing,” the words we use today.
What Do Plumbers Do?
To put it simply, a plumber’s job consists of installing and repairing water supply lines, waste disposal systems, gas lines, and all related appliances and fixtures, such as toilets and showers, in order to keep residential and commercial space functioning without issue. In the state of Texas, the only professionals legally allowed to work on gas lines, outside of those specifically employed by gas companies, are plumbers. This is because they have the critical knowledge required in order to handle such delicate and potentially dangerous gas line functions.

Gas Leak: The first thing you should do in the event of a gas leak is leave the space you are in and contact your gas provider. Once you are safely away from the gas leak and have reported it to your gas provider, contact Red Lion Plumbing to address your gas line pipes and find out why you have a leak in your space.
